FAQ
Find out more
What is debt review/debt counselling?
Debt review is a legal process, regulated by the National Credit Act, that helps over-indebted consumers restructure their debt repayments into a more affordable plan.
How do I know if I qualify for debt review?
If your income is not enough to cover your monthly debt repayments and living expenses, you may qualify. A registered debt counsellor will assess your finances to confirm.
Will I be blacklisted if I go under debt review?
No — there is no such thing as blacklisting. However, your credit profile will reflect that you are under debt review, and you won’t be able to take on more credit until you receive a clearance certificate.
How long does the debt review process take?
It varies depending on your debt amount, interest rates, and repayment ability. On average, it takes 3–5 years.
Can I apply for more credit while under debt review?
No. The National Credit Act prohibits taking on new credit during the process, to protect you from further financial strain.
Will my assets be repossessed if I’m under debt review?
If you stick to your restructured payment plan, debt review protects you from legal action and asset repossession by your credit providers.
How much will my monthly payment be under debt review?
Your debt counsellor will negotiate with your credit providers to lower your monthly instalments based on what you can afford.
Can I exit debt review early?
Yes — if you settle all your debts or meet the legal requirements to exit, you can be issued a clearance certificate and your debt review status will be removed.
What is a clearance certificate?
A clearance certificate is an official document issued by your debt counsellor once all qualifying debts are settled, allowing your credit profile to be updated.
What happens if I miss a payment while under debt review?
Missing payments can lead to termination of your debt review and possible legal action from creditors. Always speak to your debt counsellor immediately if you anticipate a problem.
Will debt review reduce my debt?
Debt review reduces your monthly payments and often lowers interest rates, but it doesn’t automatically write off your debt unless creditors agree.
Is debt review confidential?
Yes. Your personal and financial information is kept strictly confidential and is only shared with your creditors and the NCR where required by law.
